
ANDREW SLOANE is a film and television Production Designer and Art Director based in Los Angeles. Born in upstate New York, Andrew benefited early on from an 'Advanced Placement Studio Arts' program created by his educators to tailor to his prodigious drawing and painting skills. Beginning his artistic career while still a young adult, he managed a 'Sign Shop' through high school where he produced hundreds of hand-painted typographic and illustrative Signs. Andrew went on to receive his Bachelor of Fine Arts via scholarship to Syracuse University in Illustration and screenwriting. This was followed by a move to New York City where he began his journey as a Visual Merchandising Consultant and Window Designer, at such famed brands and 'BVLGARI' and 'Barney's New York.' Rooted in his early experience in theatre, Sloane's focus quickly turned toward film; Art Directing his first independent feature in NY at age 24.
To gain a more hands-on approach to the medium, Andrew returned upstate to work with regional production companies and photographers as a Set Stylist, Prop Fabricator and onset Art Director - landing campaigns for 'Kodak', 'Xerox,' 'Welch's,' and 'Chobani Yogurt.' To exert more creative prowess, Andrew then joined forces with 2 Rochester NY based event companies and spent 3 years working as an Event Designer and Creative Director for both brands. Further developing his unique voice, he created elaborate themed, immersive party environments for renowned charities and private clients, including the 'International Jazz Festival' and 'Wegman's Grocer.' Andrew still maintained sporadic employment in television; Art Directing cosmetic makeovers for national projects such as ABC's 'Extreme Home Makeover' and TBS's 'Save Our Business.'
In 20l3, with considerable confidence as a creative and hundreds of hours on film sets, Andrew repositioned focus to his original creative goal and moved to Los Angeles to pursue scripted film + television, starting initially as a non-union Set Decorator and Art Director for E!'s 'Rich Kids of Beverly Hills,' and Discovery Channel's 'Man - Caves.' With the Industry at a crossroads and several projects fleeting the southern California region, Andrew ultimately poured the breadth of his early professional experience into a curated portfolio to earn a position in the art department of HBO's 'Silicon Valley.'
A veritable master class in production design, Andrew would accompany HBO's team for nearly 6 years, rising in the ranks from Art Assistant, to Art Department Coordinator, to Assistant Art Director, and then Art Director - entering the union and Art Directors Guild. Often on-the-job and behind the scenes, Sloane continued to refine his skill set; moving from a less hands-on approach to a formal practice of set construction and architecture. He relishes in evolving techniques and a leadership style that furthers the communication of visual concepts to the many production departments - subject to a rapid television pace, fluctuating budgets and ever-expanding set builds. With the help of incredible collaborators and mentors, Andrew played part in the transformation of downtown Los Angeles into Shenzhen China, built a Tech Convention to rival CES or SXSW in under a week, and staged a Block Party with over 50 real-life Los Angeles Makers, Artists and Brands; All for the creation on an authentic narrative environment.
Andrew Sloane's work with Production Designer Richard Toyon and teams at 'Silicon Valley' garnered 6 Emmy Nominations for design, 5 Art Directors Guild Award nominations, l ADG Win and 1 Emmy Award win. His work to promote Artists, Makers, Locality and Diversity on HBO's 'Insecure' is featured in articles on HBO.com, Awards Daily, Shots, and Architectural Digest.
Andrew became a Production Designer, at last, in the months before the pandemic. To encapsulate the journey since then, defies explanation - a new chapter, both delicate, and profound - ongoing and impossible to summarize. We will just have to wait for the book.
